Great Tropical Drive
If you’re a true-blue Aussie, then nothing keeps you from venturing out to our magnificent coastline, and there’s no place that does the coast better than Tropical North Queensland. Surf, sand, sun, there’s only one way to enjoy all that the sunshine state has to offer, and that’s doing the Great Tropical Drive in your Lotus Caravan. This 500km journey from Cairns to Cooktown is packed to the gills with the white sandy stuff, World-Heritage listed national parks and amazing waterfalls.
Kick things off in Cairns and lap up the beaches all you want while you’re here, but don’t skip over the Great Barrier Reef or Wet Tropics Rainforest, they are not to be missed attractions. A scenic flight here will certainly give you some views to remember as well.
Head up to the seaside village, Palm Cove, for a spell before making your way further north to Port Douglas, which takes you along the stunning coastal road, treating you to breath-taking views of the Coral Sea. Stop off at Mossman Gorge to soak up the rainforests that just never cease to amaze and then continue to Daintree and Cape Tribulation for even more spectacular natural scenery.
After you’ve gotten your fill of the touchy-feely stuff, feel free to let loose in your 4WD on the Bloomfield Track, it’s extremely steep in places with tight corners and several creek crossings, so those who love a bit of rough-and-tumble will be right at home here.
Finish off the trek with some fish and chips on the wharf at Cooktown.
