Golden Quest Discovery Trail
Western Australia is a state built by those in search of great fortune. What they found was gold, what they left behind was one of the greatest driving routes in Australia, the Golden Quest Discovery Trail. This 965km trail takes you back in time through WA’s gold rush, where the days were long, hard and even deadly. Of course, it’s a much easier route when you have a Lotus Caravan in tow.
Start your adventure in the ‘Mother of the Western Australian Goldfields,’ in the town of Coolgardie before heading to the twin city of Kalgoorlie-Boulder to tour Australia’s biggest open pit gold mine. Venture north to Lake Ballard for an experience of a different kind. Fifty-one steel sculptures are scattered around the remote Salt Lake plain of Lake Ballard, crafted by artist Antony Gormley.
Spend the night at Niagara Dam camping area and enjoy a quick dip before heading to the ghost town of Kookynie where you can learn about the history’s gold rush at the Grand Hotel Kookynie – it’s also a great place for a drink or a meal. Continue onto the living ghost town of Gwalia whose gold mine was once run by a bloke by the name of Herbert Hoover, he’s famous for doing some government job in the States.
Shoot over to the historic township of Leonora and before you know it, you’ll have traversed 965km to Laverton, the gateway to the Outback Way. Where you go from there is up to you.
