Our favourite spots: Devils Marbles, NT
If you find yourself in the Northern Territory travelling down the Stuart Highway, mosey on down to Devils Marbles for a spell.
Located 100km south of Tennant Creek, these gigantic rounded granite boulders are a spectacular sight, especially at dawn and dusk when the sun highlights their devilish red colour.
From the parking bay, you can do a self-guided walk, where signs explain the formation of the rocks and the Aboriginal mythology behind them. There is no “official” trail but there are plenty of footprints that have been left behind by the thousands of tourists that explore the area every year.
The big piles are easy to climb so you can get right amongst them. If you don’t arrive quite in the nick of time to get the photos you want, it pays to spend the night there so you can get some amazing shots come dawn. A basic camping area without power or water is situated at the southern end of the reserve. Bookings are not required but make sure you bring cash along to pay the $3.30 overnight camping fee (per adult).
