Great Eastern Drive
Tasmania is one of the most unique places in the world, there’s so much to see and do – you won’t believe some of the scenery. One of the best ways to see it all is along the Great Eastern Drive, this 5-day trip will take you from Hobart to the Bay of Fires and all those amazing spots in between.
Day One – Hobart to Orford via Maria Island National Park
Make your way to Orford from Hobart and on to Triabunna to catch the ferry to Maria Island. There are no cars or shops here, just nature as she intended it. This is a good opportunity to do a bushwalk all the way up to the cliff-tops of Bishop and Clark or the Painted and Fossil Cliffs. There’s plenty of wildlife in this park too, so have the camera ready for a few snaps. You can camp on the island or return to your van in Orford.
Day Two – Orford to Swansea
In Swansea, there are views you could stare at for days, but there are better ways to spend your time. Visit a berry farm, do a heritage walk or swim, surf, dive and fish from the Mayfield Bay Coastal Reserve.
Day Three – Swansea to Freycinet National Park
If you’re after more action around the water, spend some time in Wineglass Bay or go to Honeymoon Bay to kayak among the dolphins. Back on land, you can do a four-wheel drive up to Cape Tourville Lighthouse for an incredible view*.
Day Four – Freycinet National Park to St Helens
Drive north to Bicheno and take a walk to Rocking Rock and the Bicheno Blowhole. Afterwards, join a wine tour to sample the local vines or visit the local wildlife park to see the dusk parade of penguins. Take the scenic route to Elephant Pass and get your fill of the famous pancakes at Mount Elephant Pancakes. In St Mary’s, climb to the top of St Patrick’s Head and lookout at some of the best scenery in Tassie before finishing up the day in St Helens.
Day Five – St Helens to Bay of Fires
Spend some time in the emerald sea around Binalong Bay or shoot straight out to Bay of Fires. You can do a two-day trek and camp overnight in the sand or go straight to the eco-lodge. Kayak down the Ansons River to finish off your trip.
*Please check road conditions before taking your four-wheel drive along this track.
