Strzelecki Track
The planned sealing of the Strzelecki Track is good news for the oil and gas fields but it also means the clock is ticking for off-roaders who have yet to cross this one off their list. Now’s the time to pack up your gear and get towing before the rains hit and before works begin.
While it’s not the most scenic Outback track if you do it one day, the real magic happens when you take the time to camp out along the route and explore the tracks that connect to it.
We recommend starting your journey in Leigh Creek so you can pass through the Vulkathunha-Gammon National Park and Flinders Ranges.
Along the route from Leigh Creek you’ll pass by the Italowie Gorge before arriving at Balcanoona. 25 km away, Arkaroola Village has some good tracks to explore as well.
From Balcanoona, head for the 56km track from Moolawatana to Mount Hopeless, towards Strzelecki Track. You can pick up the speed once you hit the track. You’ll be taken in by the desert that stretches as far as the eye can see.
Points of interest along this track include the outskirts of the Lake Eyre basin and the Montecollina Bore, which was drilled back in the 1900s to tap into the Great Artesian water supply beneath the desert.
Take a detour off the Strzeklecki Track and follow Merty Merty Track to Cameron Corner to grab a cold one at the pub and a bite to eat.
At the end of the Strzelecki Track is the small town of Innamincka. Here, you can visit the famous Burke and Wills Dog Tree, Coongie Lakes and King’s Marker as well as other historic sites.
At 489km, it’s not a long track but there are plenty of adjoining tracks and deserts that can turn this trip into a mini Outback adventure.
