Northern Territory Red Centre Way
The Red Centre Way features some of our country’s biggest natural icons, including Uluru as well as a whole treasure trove of other little gems throughout.
Day one of your trip begins in Alice Springs, this town is so full of awesome experiences, you could spend a few days here alone. The Alice Springs Desert Park is a must see, so is the Alice Springs Reptile Centre and Olive Pink Botanic Garden.
On the way from Alice Springs to Glen Helen, you’ve got to visit three key points, West MacDonnell Ranges, Simpsons Gap and the spectacular Standley Chasm, which is at its best either side of noon.
223km away, just past Glen Helen, you’ll come across another remarkable sight in Redbank Gorge. The waters here are invigorating and the car park is the starting point for a walk to the summit of Mt. Sonder. The crowning jewel of this leg though is Watarrka National Park and Kings Canyon. There are several walking tracks that allow you to explore this 100m–high canyon filled with jagged red cliff-peaks.
Along the more than five-hour trip to Yulara from Kings Canyon, you’ll pass the iconic Uluru. Stop here to enjoy the sunset and some unforgettable night-time dining.
Come sunrise, consider a walk through the Liru Track, which passes the Uluru-Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre. The cultural centre has Anangu displays, interactive exhibitions and heritage information.
Once you’ve finished exploring the park, head on your way back to Alice Springs and keep an eye out for Mt. Conner for a tour or a couple of photos by the road-side. Finally, take a detour to Henbury Meteorites Conservation Park Reserve to observe the dozen craters that were formed thousands of years ago.
