Top 10 tips to prepare your van
The map books are out, the itinerary is in the making – getting ready for a trip can be just as much fun as being out there. However, preparations are essential for ensuring an enjoyable holiday, as plenty of things can go wrong unless you have a proper checklist. Follow these ten tips so you can enjoy peace of mind as you hit the road.
1. SERVICE
A health check for your caravan is a must. For total piece of mind, make sure your caravan is completely up to scratch by having your caravan serviced by your preferred local dealership or caravan servicing company.
2. TYRES & WHEELS
Inspect your tyres often to check the condition of the tread and identify any damage. Ensure that wheel nuts are present and
tightened, and that tyre pressure is appropriate for your adventure’s terrain.
3. BRAKES
Make sure that your brake cables are connected, and ensure that the hand brake engages and releases evenly (and remains released before you take off!)
4. PLUG
Before connecting, make sure that the plug and socket are free from dirt, and check that the A-frame wiring insulation is in good condition for your travels.
5. LIGHTS
A two-person job, check that all of your lights are working, including brakes, indicators, reverse, parking lights, side lights, number plate and ensure that the indicator light (if fitted) is visible, confirming that it’s operational.
6. GAS BOTTLES
Inspect your gas bottles, making sure that they are secured and turned off. Have them refilled if required.
7. COUPLING & SAFETY CHAINS
Ensure that coupling is secured to your tow vehicle, and that safety chains are in good condition and properly secured to both drawbar and tow vehicle.
8. BATTERY SYSTEM
Test your battery system to be confident that everything is in working order. After all, a flat battery means less time to explore
the wilderness.
9. WATER TANK
Keep your water tank clean and hygienic by flushing it thoroughly and refilling with fresh drinking water.
10. FRIDGE
Keep your fridge tidy, ensure its door is secured without leaks and run it at least 24 hours before you’re planning on heading off to make sure your food and drinks stay cold!
