What to expect in a towing course
Practising safe towing, whether you’re a novice or seasoned veteran of the road, is always a good idea. And a towing course is the perfect way to sharpen your skills. If you think it’s time you had a refresher, here’s what you can expect from a towing course.
A good towing course will run you upwards of $100 for a full-day of theoretical and practical training, including one-on-one exercises. You’re encouraged to bring your own caravan along but they may have caravans on site, if need be.
Before you hit the track, you’ll likely spend a good couple of minutes going through the hitch up routine, including backing up your tow vehicle and connecting everything up.
You might start off going around the course doing some sharp turns just to get a feel for things. But the rest of your time will probably be spent reversing.
In the theory part of the course, you should learn about hitching, loading, mechanical knowledge and weight distribution. There’s a lot to remember, but it’s all pretty essential stuff for staying safe on the road. You’ll even likely be reminded of things that are easy to overlook, like filling up your water tank before you leave home.
If you’re still new to this caravanning thing, a towing course can be a huge help for building up your knowledge and confidence. Even if you think you know what you’re doing, you could be surprised by some of the things you learn.
