Elevate Your Caravan Experience with Essential Accessories

Written in collaboration with Trip in a Van

Exploring Australia in a caravan is a dream come true for many. Whether you’re an experienced caravanner or just starting your journey, having the right accessories can significantly enhance your travel experience. These accessories can improve safety, convenience, and comfort, making your journey smoother and more enjoyable.

In collaboration with Lotus Caravans ambassadors, Trip in a Van, we’ve put together a comprehensive guide to must-have caravan accessories for Australian travellers.

The Basics: Must-Have Caravan Parts and Accessories

To ensure a successful and enjoyable trip, it’s essential to start with the basics. Here are some fundamental caravan parts and accessories every traveller should consider.

start with A Functional Layout

A well-thought-out floorplan is crucial for a comfortable journey. According to Trip in a Van, it’s worth exploring different options to find a layout that suits your family’s needs. Consider whether you need a separate shower and toilet or if a combo unit will suffice. Think about storage space for all the gear you plan to bring and whether you’ll be cooking inside the caravan or utilising outdoor facilities.

Sirocco Fans

“These 12-volt fans are an absolute must for off-grid caravanning” says TIAV.

They are fully adjustable, have a low current draw, and are perfect for keeping the interior cool. TIAV recommends running one in each bunk for the kids and two more in the main bed and lounge areas.

Van Pockets

TIAV’s van pockets are a great DIY storage solution. These self-adhesive pockets utilise empty wall space to store books, laptops, maps, sunglasses, hats, and more, helping to keep your caravan organised.

A Gas or Diesel Heater

For those planning to travel in colder climates, a heater is a real creature comfort. “We have used both gas and diesel heaters in the past” says TIAV.  “They both work equally as well, but we now opt for a gas heater as we already carry gas bottles for hot water and bbq cooking”.

Lithium Battery System and Inverter

A robust battery system is essential for running 240-volt appliances off-grid. “Technology has come so far in the last 5 years. It is now very simple to add a 240-volt capable battery system to your caravan. From our experience, we think a system with a capacity of 600amp hours of lithium, a 3000-watt inverter, AND 1000 watts of solar is the ideal package. We use REDARC gear with the REDVISION power management system in our Lotus Caravan. Having a setup  like this will allow you to run everything inside your caravan as if you were on a powered site.”

Navigating Caravan Accessories: What Do You Really Need?

Determining which accessories are essential depends on your specific needs, lifestyle and travel plans.

1. Assess Your Travel Style

Consider whether you will be staying in powered caravan parks or spending most of your time off-grid. Your power and heating requirements will vary accordingly.

2. Consider Your Comfort

Think about what will make your trip more comfortable. Heating, cooling and even your choice of comfortable bedding can make a significant difference in your overall experience.

3. Evaluate Storage Solutions

Effective storage is crucial for keeping your caravan tidy and functional. Accessories like van pockets and custom storage solutions can help maximise your space.

What’s New in Caravan Accessories?

The caravan accessory market is constantly evolving with new trends and innovations. Products designed specifically for caravanning isn’t a new concept, but the technology, quality, and aesthetic of caravan accessories has improved by leaps and bounds. Items that are lightweight and space-saving, and accessories that add a touch of style and personalisation to your caravan, can all add alot of value.
